World champion Bianca Walkden took silver in the World Taekwondo Grand Prix final in Japan after a loss to arch rival Zheng Shuyin at the +67kg class.
This had been the first meeting between the group since Walkden’s contentious victory from the Olympic winner in the World Championship in May.
There the Briton employed unconventional strategies to induce Zheng into a series.
Walkden led 5-0 after the opening around in Japan, in which she struck first, but Zheng levelled to force a decider.
Team-mate Christian McNeish impressively defeated world champion Lee Dae-hoon of South Korea 33-26 at the -68kg semi-finals.
But, Iran’s Asian Games winner as he moved to a controlling success, Mirhashem Hosseini proved too powerful in the last.
Bradly Sinden — rival for the first time since becoming Britain male world champion in the sport in May — endured a last-16 defeat at the -68kg division.
His return will be stepped up by olympic silver medallist Lutalo Muhammad after a series of injuries from the men’s heavyweight division on Saturday, and it may contain Mahama Cho.
European winner Lauren Williams could have a considerable step towards qualifying for Tokyo 2020 and will feature in the women’s -67 kg division.
